Professor Cheng Man-Ch'ing created a movement system called The Eight Ways™. By separating the tai chi sequence or “form” into eight movements, the system is easy to learn and fun to practice. These exercises deliver the essential health benefits of the full tai chi form in an efficient and enjoyable format. This format is ideal for you whether you are sedentary or active and athletic.

By learning and practicing The Eight Ways, you may notice the following:

  • More stability and less effort when rising out of a chair to standing position.

  • Greater leg strength and less fear of falling when climbing or descending stairs. Applying the same confidence and strength when walking as well.

  • Better sense of security and coordination when lifting or reaching objects out of easy-access range.

  • More confidence in your body, more energy, better circulation, and easier breathing.

  • More mobility and range of motion by applying the Eight Ways awareness to similar daily movements.

Start the The Eight Ways Series by learning the first movement in the series, called Sculling. Sculling refers to a method of rowing a boat which we'll explain more as we go to the first module.

You may go at your own pace through the series. Experience the various modules within the series in sequential order as they have a logical progression. This approach makes the movements as easy to learn and easy to practice as possible.

Each Way of the Eight Ways series gives you the following format:

  • a brief introduction and overview including basic instruction,
  • basic concepts or principles involved,
  • applying your enhanced whole-body awarenesses to daily activity,
  • some practice of the movement,
  • wrapping up with review and points of interest.

These components bringing alive the imagery and the full exploration of the movement.

Let’s proceed to Sculling!
